With the holiday season comes more cooking that usual. Since cooking fires are the most common kind of house fire and the cause of most home injuries, follow these safety tips in your kitchen.
Keep your cooking area safe by keeping flammable materials away from your stovetop. Keep items like oven mitts, paper towels, and kitchen towels safely away. Also, make sure your kitchen curtains don’t hang near your cooktop. Do keep a lid handy to smother a stovetop fire.
Grease fires catch quickly. Never leave your kitchen when you have food frying or grilling. Set a timer to remind you to check your oven frequently when baking or broiling.
The holidays are a social time, but don’t overdo on the celebrating while you are cooking. Being under the influence of alcohol can make you sleepy and slow your reaction time. It can also make mishaps with knives and kitchen appliances more likely.
Keep the kitchen floor clear so you don’t trip over children’s toys and make sure small children stay out of the kitchen.
